How we see children

Broadwater Academy is the premier learning community on the Eastern Shore of Virginia for pre-K through grade 12. With a challenging curriculum, talented instructors, and a diverse student body, Broadwater develops the next generation of respectful, civic-minded leaders and productive citizens. For more than a decade, students have come here from all over the world.

The work shows up in what students make and say. Art teacher Tatum Ford has had students' sculpture work run in the family, and Broadwater students performed Anastasia on stage. A strong delegation traveled to Model General Assembly in Richmond, and Kyler Blake '26 won a statewide environmental art contest. Boat safety education came through a partnership with VMRC.

Broadwater Academy was named to the 2025 Advanced Placement Program School Honor Roll, earning Bronze distinction and an AP Access Award. Broadwater offers eleven AP courses taught by six qualified instructors, and two faculty members have been chosen as AP exam readers in the last two years. Virginia Living named Broadwater best K-12 school in Eastern Virginia.

What you notice in practice

Teachers here are the talented instructors the school is built around. They know each student by name across a diverse student body, and they hold the bar high with a challenging curriculum. Ask on a tour how a typical class runs and how teachers keep track of how your child is doing.

Rooms and pacing look different across a pre-K through grade 12 school. Broadwater Academy is the premier learning community on the Eastern Shore of Virginia for pre-K through grade 12 education, and its approach pairs a challenging curriculum with talented instructors. Families who want to see how a specific grade runs its day can ask the school about a visit.

How we work with families

Parents stay connected through ParentsWeb, which handles billing and resources in one place. A volunteer page lists ways to help, and news items on the site share what students are doing — AP readers, boat safety, performances. Questions about a child's day are best brought to the teacher or the school office. Specific policies about communication can be asked about directly.

New families settle in at their own pace. Parents can ask the office how the first weeks work, who their child's main contact is, and where to bring questions. The parent portal, ParentsWeb, keeps schedules, billing, and school notices in one place, so you always know what is coming next.
